Who is Covered?
Note - Please refer to the brochures attached for our programs specific to Physicians, Attorneys, and Police/Fire groups
Each employee of an employer-policyholder, or each employee in a specific class designated by the policyholder, is eligible for insurance under the master policy issued to the employer. In the instance where policyholder-owned aircraft coverage is afforded, guests of the policyholder riding as passengers on the aircraft are also eligible for the policyholder-owned aircraft coverage.
The policyholder may select the particular classes of persons to be covered. All persons within a class will automatically be covered. The following are samples of classifications which may be used.
- All officers of the policyholder.
- All full-time salaried employees of the policyholder.
- All full-time salaried employees of the policyholder earning between $20,000 and $30,000 per year.
- All full-time employees of the policyholder specifically named below.
If coverage is desired for an over age 70 individual, please provide the following information with your application for a Business Travel Accident policy:
- Name of the individual;
- Date of birth of the individual;
- Benefit amount or applicable class.
When Are They Covered?
The policy covers accidental bodily injuries sustained by an insured person and arising out of the hazards applicable to such person as stated in the policy. The various hazards which may be written are described in the plans on the following pages.
Coverage on any company business trip begins when the insured employee leaves the regular place of employment or residence, whichever is later. Coverage ends upon conclusion of the business trip or the employee’s return to the regular place of employment or residence whichever is earlier. Local travel within a specified geographic area (such as the city in which an employee works) may be excluded to reduce the cost of the plan.
Description of Coverages
Accidental Death and Dismemberment - Pays the maximum benefit selected for loss of: life; both hands; both feet; sight of both eyes; one hand and one foot; either hand or foot and sight of one eye; speech and hearing.
Pays one-half the maximum benefit for loss of: a hand; foot; sight of one eye; speech; or hearing.
Pay one-quarter the maximum benefit for loss of thumb and index finger of either hand.
Loss must occur within 365 days of the date of the accident.
If more than one loss is sustained as the result of one accident, the
amount payable will not be more than the maximum benefit.
Plan Designs
The Following Plans are selected most by Employers and cover insured persons while they are traveling anywhere in the world:

C-28: 24 Hour All Risk Business and Pleasure – provides coverage for accidental injuries while at home, work, or play, commuting, on vacation or traveling on business. Coverage is written on a per person basis.

C-12: All Risk Protection While on a Business trip – provides coverage for accidental injuries while your employees are on a business trip. It does not cover an injury sustained during the course of everyday travel to and from work and bona fide leaves of absence or vacation. Coverage is written on travel exposure.

C-41: Commutation - provides coverage for injury resulting from accident which occurs while the Insured Person is commuting directly between his or her residence and place of regular employment by automobile or other conveyance not normally used by the Insured Person for commuting.

C-46: Hijacking – provides coverage for injury resulting from an accident which occurs during a Hijacking while on a business trip (Not available in Florida and Maryland).

C-57: Personal Deviation – provides coverage for injury resulting from an accident which occurs during a Sojourn or Personal Deviation from a covered Business Trip (Not available in Florida and West Virginia).
If Aircraft Coverage is desired - the following plans can be purchased to cover either just the employees or to include the crew:

C-18: Employee Only Aircraft Coverage - provides coverage for injury resulting from an accident while the Insured Person is on a Trip as a passenger on, boarding or alighting from, or being struck by an aircraft which is owned, leased or operated on behalf of the Policyholder.

C-19: Employee & Crew Aircraft Coverage - provides coverage for injury resulting from an accident while the Insured Person is on a Trip as a passenger, pilot, operator, or member of the crew on, boarding or alighting from, or being struck by an aircraft which is owned, leased or operated on behalf of the Policyholder.
All Other Plans - if a firm desires coverage which differs from any plans described, please outline details in the appropriate section of the request form, or contact your local Group Sales Representative.
Optional Benefits
Accident Medical Expense - We will pay the Reasonable Expenses incurred for Medical Care, in excess of the Deductible Amount incurred within 26 weeks after the accident and submitted within five years after the date of that injury.
Accident Total Disability - This provides a weekly cash benefit for up to 52 weeks while an insured employee is continuously and totally disabled as a result of an injury, and unable to perform all duties of his or her occupation.
Adaptive Home & Vehicle - This provides a one-time cost of alterations incurred within two years from the date of the accident to the Insured Person's principal residence, and/or private automobile, to make the residence accessible or the private automobile drivable or rideable.
Airbag - This provides an additional benefit if the injured person was positioned in a seat equipped with a factory-installed Air Bag and properly strapped in the Seat Belt when the Air Bag inflated.
Bereavement - We will pay for the expenses incurred by his or her Dependent Spouse and Child(ren) for Bereavement Counseling for each Covered Person per accident.
Coma - This provides one percent of the maximum benefit for each month a person remains in a coma due to a covered accident.
Day Care - If the employee loses his or her life in a covered accident, this pays an annual day care benefit for any dependent child for up to four years.
Education - If the employee loses his or her life in a covered accident, this pays an annual benefit provided such child remains an unmarried, full-time student in an institution of higher learning.
Paralysis - Under this option, insureds who suffer a covered injury resulting in quadriplegia receive the maximum benefit; in paraplegia, 75% of the maximum benefit and in hemiplegia, 50% of the maximum benefit.
Permanent Total Disability - This option provides the maximum benefit, less any amount paid or payable under the Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefit, if an insured suffers a total disability resulting from, and within 365 days of, a covered accident. Payout can be made in a lump sum, or on a monthly or weekly basis.
Rehabilitation - In the case of a covered loss (other than loss of life), this option provides a training benefit for work the insured would not otherwise be trained to perform.
Seat Belt - This option provides an additional benefit if covered loss occurs while the insured is wearing a seat belt in an automobile.
Spouse Education - Provides an occupational training benefit for the spouse upon the covered death of the employee.
Therapeutic Counseling - Provides a benefit which pays counseling expenses required due to loss when an employee suffers a covered loss (other than loss of life).
**Please note that we can not provide all of these additional benefits for some states and that some benefits are subject to an increased premium - please contact your sales representative for more details.
Aggregate Limits of Liability
The aggregate limit shall be the total limit
of the Company's liability for all benefits payable under the Accidental
Death and Dismemberment benefit and Permanent Total Disability benefit,
if applicable, with respect to all classes of Insured Persons arising
out of injury sustained by two or more Insured Persons as the result of
any one accident. For any loss exceeding the aggregate limitation the
benefits for each Insured Person will be proportionately reduced.
General Exclusions and Limitations
The Business Travel Accident policy does not cover loss caused, or contributed to, by:
- suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury;
- sickness or disease (except infection caused by an accidental wound or cut);
- war or any act of war whether declared or undeclared (basic coverages exclude war-related loss but The Hartford offers a plan to provide war risk coverage in conjunction with any basic plan)*;
- injury sustained while in military service;
- injury sustained while riding as a passenger or otherwise in any
aircraft other than as provided in the plans of coverage.*
* Excluded under air hazard: aircraft owned, leased or operated by or on behalf of the policyholder; or flying in any aircraft being used for aerobatic or stunt flying; racing or endurance tests; crop dusting or seeding or spraying; fire fighting; exploration; pipe or power line inspection; any form of hunting, bird or fowl herding; aerial photography; banner towing; or, any test or experimental purpose; or, any flight which requires a special permit or waiver from the FAA, even though granted. - injury sustained while voluntarily taking drugs which federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription, including sedatives, narcotics, barbiturates, amphetamines, or hallucinogens, unless the drug is taken as prescribed or administered by a licensed physician.
- injury sustained while legally intoxicated from the use of alcohol.
*In reference to Exclusion C above - War Risk Coverage can be added for an additional premium.
Underwriting
Due to the variety of plans available and the many rating factors to be considered, specific manual rates are not available for field quotation. To obtain a proposed plan of insurance complete the Business Travel Accident form attached to brochure 403510 Rev., which can be obtained from your reporting office, or complete the request form.
Special attention should be given to the following:
- Be certain to indicate the type of coverage desired;
- Answer all questions completely;
- Specify in detail the classes of person to be insured, the benefit amounts desired and the remainder of the questions in that section of the request form.
If policyholder owned, leased or operated aircraft coverage is desired, additional information will be required. Special underwriting considerations which apply states that the plane must be operated with the consent of the policyholder and must have a competent professional pilot. It should be established that the aircraft is actually owned, leased or operated by or on behalf of the policyholder.
Eligibility
All policies are written based on an existing employer to employee relationship. Some states are allowed to cover guests and non-employees including, but not limited to, Board of Directors and Trustees. If coverage is desired for a group where an employer-employee relationship does not exist, refer to your reporting office.
Please note that in the states of Colorado and New Mexico there is a ten life mimum to provide coverage. Illinois and West Virginia have a two life minimum.
